Freshly squeezed lemonade is one of summer's simplest pleasures. This classic recipe begins with an easy homemade simple syrup, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely for a perfectly smooth drink without any graininess. Fresh lemon juice provides the bright, refreshing flavor that's impossible to achieve with bottled juice, while plenty of cold water keeps everything light and thirst-quenching. Whether you're serving it at a backyard barbecue, packing it for a picnic, or simply enjoying a glass on a warm afternoon, this timeless drink is always worth making from scratch.

Make It Ahead

Lemonade can be made up to three days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Give it a good stir before serving, as the lemon juice may naturally settle over time.

Garnish Before Serving

Thin lemon slices and a few sprigs of fresh mint make an effortless garnish while adding a fresh, summery presentation. For the coldest, most refreshing glass, chill the lemonade for several hours before serving.

Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 8–10 lemons

4 cups cold water

ice, for serving

lemon slices, for garnish

fresh mint sprigs, for garnish, optional

Instructions

Make the Simple Syrup:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow the syrup to cool.

Prepare the Lemonade:

  1. Pour the cooled simple syrup into a large pitcher. Add the lemon juice and 4 cups cold water. Add extra lemon slices if desired. Stir well to combine. Taste and adjust with additional water if a less tart lemonade is desired.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until thorough:

  1. Fill glasses with ice. Pour the lemonade over the ice. Garnish with lemon slices and fresh mint, if desired.
